OUGD401 - Critical Analysis: Study Task 1

Task

Based on the material, exercises, discussions and concepts introduced during the studio session:

- Identify and explain 5 reasons why critical analysis is an important part of education, learning and developing your understanding.
- Identify and explain why the crit (group critique) is useful in the development of your work, skills and opinions.
- Choose 5 criteria from the list that were generated during the studio session. For each criteria brefly summarise what will generally affect how you judge what you like and dislike when analysing examples of work. (you should aim to use the images that you brought to the session as examples).

5 reasons why critical analysis is an important part of education, learning and developing your understanding:

1. We can understand where we went wrong and know how to improve
2. It helps us to improve our design skills
3. We will continue to improve if we are able to receive constructive criticism
4. It will boost us as designers as we will become more aware of the most successful pieces of work
5. It helps us to understand who our target audience is and whether we have met the criteria necessary to engage our audience

Identify and explain why the crit (group critique) is useful in the development of your work, skills and opinions.

Group critique gives me confidence in my abilities and allows me to see where my strengths and weaknesses lie whilst informing me about how I can improve my work. Receiving direct opinions from other people studying the same discipline as me really helps too as we all think in the same way meaning that any feedback we do get is constructive and helpful.

Choose 5 criteria from the list that were generated during the studio session. For each criteria brefly summarise what will generally affect how you judge what you like and dislike when analysing examples of work. (you should aim to use the images that you brought to the session as examples).

The list generated in the studio session :

Layout
Composition
Colour
Communication
Context

Love

Colour - The use of two colours here makes the business cards look extremely minimalistic and professional. These are two traits which I believe all graphic design should have. They most certainly fulfil their purpose and they're attractive to look at. I always think design looks much better if there is a minimal use of colour as it looks much more crisp and to the point.

Composition - Composition is an extremely important element of graphic design. It is a skill which should be perfected to ensure that the message is portrayed successfully, allowing the audience to instantly engage in the piece of art. In this case I feel that the composition works really well as it has been placed directly above the sofa making it a focal point for anyone in the room. It is perfectly aligned with the sofa making it look like it fits in the room well and it doesn't look out of place at all.

Hate

Communication - I think that the Olympic logo is poorly designed as it doesn't instantly portray the Olympics 2012 to the audience in my opinion. Communication is a key element to graphic design and if something isn't easily recognisable and if it doesn't create instant impact then I feel it fails to communicate a message successfully.

Function - The function of this web page isn't very clear at all. It is hard to tell what it is advertising which is istantly a negative trait for a website to have. The designer hasn't put much thought into what will make it a successful design and as a result it has been poorly constructed. It is advertising electronics repair and installation authority and yet from a glance I would say it looks like some sort of gambling website. I like simplistic designs as well which is why this stood out to be as being a very poor design.

Execution - The execution of this advert is extremely poor. The use of garish colours and unattractive images do nothing for the quality of the advert. It is unappealing to look at and the use of typeface doesn't work very well in conjunction to the images. I think that if something is poorly executed it can not only look unprofessional but it can also make you feel put off rather than intrigued to find out what their food is like.
